- DULA and DEBA: Differentiable Ergonomic Risk Models for Postural Assessment and Optimization in Ergonomically Intelligent pHRI Ergonomics and human comfort are essential concerns in physical human-robot interaction applications. Defining an accurate and easy-to-use ergonomic assessment model stands as an important step in providing feedback for postural correction to improve operator health and comfort. Common practical methods in the area suffer from inaccurate ergonomics models in performing postural optimization. In order to retain assessment quality, while improving computational considerations, we propose a novel framework for postural assessment and optimization for ergonomically intelligent physical human-robot interaction. We introduce DULA and DEBA, differentiable and continuous ergonomics models learned to replicate the popular and scientifically validated RULA and REBA assessments with more than 99% accuracy. We show that DULA and DEBA provide assessment comparable to RULA and REBA while providing computational benefits when being used in postural optimization. We evaluate our framework through human and simulation experiments. We highlight DULA and DEBA's strength in a demonstration of postural optimization for a simulated pHRI task. 4 authors · May 6, 2022
1 Deep Learning-Based Connector Detection for Robotized Assembly of Automotive Wire Harnesses The shift towards electrification and autonomous driving in the automotive industry results in more and more automotive wire harnesses being installed in modern automobiles, which stresses the great significance of guaranteeing the quality of automotive wire harness assembly. The mating of connectors is essential in the final assembly of automotive wire harnesses due to the importance of connectors on wire harness connection and signal transmission. However, the current manual operation of mating connectors leads to severe problems regarding assembly quality and ergonomics, where the robotized assembly has been considered, and different vision-based solutions have been proposed to facilitate a better perception of the robot control system on connectors. Nonetheless, there has been a lack of deep learning-based solutions for detecting automotive wire harness connectors in previous literature. This paper presents a deep learning-based connector detection for robotized automotive wire harness assembly. A dataset of twenty automotive wire harness connectors was created to train and evaluate a two-stage and a one-stage object detection model, respectively. The experiment results indicate the effectiveness of deep learning-based connector detection for automotive wire harness assembly but are limited by the design of the exteriors of connectors. 2 authors · Sep 24, 2023
- BikeBench: A Bicycle Design Benchmark for Generative Models with Objectives and Constraints We introduce BikeBench, an engineering design benchmark for evaluating generative models on problems with multiple real-world objectives and constraints. As generative AI's reach continues to grow, evaluating its capability to understand physical laws, human guidelines, and hard constraints grows increasingly important. Engineering product design lies at the intersection of these difficult tasks, providing new challenges for AI capabilities. BikeBench evaluates AI models' capabilities to generate bicycle designs that not only resemble the dataset, but meet specific performance objectives and constraints. To do so, BikeBench quantifies a variety of human-centered and multiphysics performance characteristics, such as aerodynamics, ergonomics, structural mechanics, human-rated usability, and similarity to subjective text or image prompts. Supporting the benchmark are several datasets of simulation results, a dataset of 10,000 human-rated bicycle assessments, and a synthetically generated dataset of 1.6M designs, each with a parametric, CAD/XML, SVG, and PNG representation. BikeBench is uniquely configured to evaluate tabular generative models, large language models (LLMs), design optimization, and hybrid algorithms side-by-side. Our experiments indicate that LLMs and tabular generative models fall short of hybrid GenAI+optimization algorithms in design quality, constraint satisfaction, and similarity scores, suggesting significant room for improvement. We hope that BikeBench, a first-of-its-kind benchmark, will help catalyze progress in generative AI for constrained multi-objective engineering design problems.
